The US government was happy over the last two months, only because some of the banks that received the bailout money returned them back with the added penalties. But the good time seems to be coming to an end, with GMAC asking for another five billion aid from the Government over the next two weeks. That is indeed a huge commitment for the US Government which has already pumped in 12.5 billion dollars into the company.
The US government is risking losing the entire money, apart from the guarantees it has given to various other lenders to GMAC, but there does not seem to any other viable option.
