The city has proclaimed the one hour period in the evening starting 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, as Earth Hour. During that 60 minutes, residents, businesses, non-commercial establishments and government agencies are all asked to turn off non-essential lighting. This is done in order to conserve energy and raise awareness about the increasingly clear global climatic changes. Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008, the message had grown into a global sustainability movement. A new island got created this week  off the coast of Tonga. This was created by the powerful underwater volcano that erupted in the south Pacific this week. The eruption which  began on Monday, shot rocks, steam and ash thousands of feet into the air. The volcano had two vents. One was on a  small uninhabited island. The other vent was about 330 ft offshore. The materials shot into air from the eruption had bridged the gap – thus forming a new land mass and thus forming an island.

Discovery, the NASA’s space shuttle has docked with the International space station. Installation work will start on Wednesday. US astronaut Sandra Magnus will return instead. The docking happened at 2120 GMT Tuesday.
