NBC Universal seems to have decided to change the name of their Sci Fi Channel into Syfy to pull in a more broad based target audience.

The name Sci Fi is typically associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys who have their video games as opposed to the public in general and especially the female audience.

Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi Channel, said that the change has given them a unique word and hence the opportunity to build a new brand from now on.

But, the sci fi fans on the web reacted with disbelief and derision and anger.

People on twitter have commented that “Syfy” sounds like syphilis.

But syfy.com, which is going to replace scifi.com has already gone live. And the fact is that the channel has all sorts of content which is not connected to science fiction. Hence, a change of branding seems to be fine.

NASA’s Space Shuttle “Discovery” still remains glued to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The launch was halted when a gaseous hydrogen leak was ‘discovered’ on a line connecting ground support equipment to the external tank.

Technicians are hopeful as the repairs were moving along smoothly. Hence, NASA is hopeful of resolving it and launching Discovery by March 15. NASA was also pretty confident of acceptable launch conditions.

Let us hope that there are no further ‘discovery’ of problems or issues which can derail it once more.

India is set to get into the select group of nations that have sent their mission to the far away moon. The Indian space craft Chandrayan is set to land in the moon by November second week, after several weeks of traveling in space. The successful tracking till date in itself is a commendable achievement by the scientific community of Indian space research organization, which has been banned from procuring advanced technology items from other countries a decade back. Even then the Indian scientists have proven their mettle and successfully launched  and moved their space craft towards moon in the past few weeks. There are only five other nations that have successfully sent moon missions so far, including US, Russia and France.
